Madden 15 Minute Tips: Spy Stuffer

Stopping the run just got easier.
Stopping the run just got easier.

Stopping the run can be a painfully difficult affair, especially against those bruising power backs that are all but guaranteed to shed the first tackler. However, there are some unique techniques you can use to help keep your defense afloat in the face of a strong running game.

In the latest in our Madden 15 Minute Tips collection, I want to introduce you to a concept I like to call Spy Stuffing, which utilizes the QB spy defensive hot route to vastly improve our ability to get more defenders in on the play. While this tip won’t shut down the run on its own, it’s a great asset to use along with sound gap control, proper formation alignment and other necessary approaches to run stopping.

Check out the full video for a short-but-sweet explanation of how Spy Stuffing works, why it’s effective, and how to use the same technique to help stop one of the most popular hot routes in Madden 15 — the slant route.

WEBSITE BONUS TIP
Enhance Your MLB in obvious running situations with the Spy Stuffer technique. All you need to do is pull your MLB back 4-5 yards for extra depth, and put him in a QB spy. This will allow your linebacker to navigate around blockers easier and get to the RB. You can also do this with linebackers on the weak side of the play, to get them more involved in stopping the run. Never do this with a LB on the side that you think the run is heading toward, however, because you may lose position on the edge as your LB will move more toward the center, as opposed to holding the outside. Middle, or weak side is the preferred for this technique. Weak side can also be dangerous to use as a Counter play could cause you tons of trouble. For this reason, I only recommend using the Spy Stuffer on the MLB, safeties and corners.
