Get a TD Freek: If you want to run the ball, you are at a SERIOUS disadvantage if you are not using a TD Freek. This thing is not a gimmick. I will never play Madden again without one of these for the left joystick, because it gives you drastically more control over your player than the default sticks can give you. There are cuts in this game that you simply cannot make reliably without this sort of leverage tool. This is one of those things where you don’t even realize how little control you have over your player now until you pop one of these on and see the difference for yourself. Give yourself an hour or two to get used to it, and you will never, ever play again without these. Again, I use this for the left movement joystick only.

Zone Buster: If you ever come across a savvy defensive player that finds a way to scheme away your running game while staying in heavy zone coverage, try this play modification out: Select the PA HB Wheel, put the receiver on a slant inside, Graham on a fake-slant outside like in the video, and then put your fullback in a route to the flats on the side of the receiver. When you run this play action play, the routes by your fullback, receiver, and your left TE will all spread the defense apart on the right side of the field, and usually leave Graham WIDE open against most zone coverages.

Running Even Better: Don’t think that just because the Power O run is your base run in this or any scheme, that you can’t use other types of runs in your playbook. If you are finding difficulty running to the left, or just running in general with the Power O against a specific opponent’s defense, try out the HB Toss instead. The Toss play is very similar in how it must be user-defended so much of the same concepts apply, but it may be just what you need to get around a schematic defense your opponent might find that stifles your Power O. In one game in particular I played an opponent that found away to blow up my Power O game while staying in heavy zone coverage, so I simply transitioned to the HB Toss as my primary run, and I finished the game with over 400 yards rushing, because in order to stop the toss my opponent had to call a different play entirely, which made my Power O runs effective once again.

The primary downside of the HB Toss in the I-form tight formation in the 49ers playbook, is that you will have to pick it at the play call screen since you cannot audible to it naturally. This will take away your inside running game a little bit, but you can still cut your Power O runs back inside if you really need to, or call the odd isolation run when you feel your opponent is giving up too much in the middle.

As a general rule of thumb for running the HB Toss, try to avoid sprinting laterally if you can afford it. It’s usually better to patiently wait until your blocks set up before exploding through the hole. I typically only sprint on Toss plays when I feel like someone is coming in unblocked and I need to get to the edge quickly, or when my blockers are consumed early and I want to get the yards I can before defenders shed them.
